It's the elegance of the way he speaks which makes his comments sound more substantial than they actually are. His ideas aren't new, they are just aspects of perception which we've overlooked. He's more of an observer than an innovator; 'genius' is perhaps too great a claim, despite Schoenberg's comments.
But why such aggression in some of the comments other people have posted on YouTube? Here was a man who wanted to live in peace with everything - yet his work provokes aggressive argument.

This man is dead but his malign influence on art lives on. He set back the progress of twentieth-century music by his amateurish attitude towards music, which seems to have been motivated by frustration over his failure to succeed musically in early life, a fact which Cage enthusiasts want to cover up. But we should not let Cage's personal problems regards his artistic failure to influence the music being written today.
The man may be dead, but his vile anti-artistic ideas need to die too.

He's right. You don't have to go to music school to make music. Charlie Parker and John Coltrane never studied music at the university level and Miles dropped out of Julliard after just one year. (He studied classically there, no jazz program back then.) Also, what about people like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, should we not consider them artists just because they don't have singer/songwriter degrees from Berklee? And discount people like Stevie, Marvin etc. and countless "rock" acts...? jeez

Though you make some valid points, the truth is that the "artists" you mention here, no doubt, will be pretty much forgotten in 50 years or so. The real "greats" (classical composers) survive - and only those steeped in tradition (which means "studying at the conservatory") are candidates for immortality. This is a simple historical fact.

maybe he didnt actually believe what he claimed but just said it to sound controversial and not have to write any music but still earn a living and provoke reaction, that is pretty genius in itself.
I say this because in his life he spoke a lot about taking away his ego from sound but the thing is by saying that your attracting attention to yourself so it just like a intellectual trick.

@ThePukingExperience: I don't think this kind of music will ever be played in children's piano recitals, if that's what you're worried about.
Personally, I don't have to like his music to appreciate what he did for art.
Your judgment on a man's desire to cover up his failures may not be far off (we'll never truly know what drove Cage to think about music this way), but you say it like it's fact, which is more vitriolic than anything John Cage has said here.

He meant that beethoven songs are written down. It only changes a little from performance to performance. The song will always have the same notes and changes. Traffic, on the otherhand, is improvisatory. And this is true. I dont see how one can disagree.
