I figure he's saying they find it more difficult to identify the underlying pulse of a piece of music, or rather they find it difficult a lot of the time. It's quite a common stumbling block for many students I teach; unless they can hear a four four beat on a drum or click track, they don't identify it being there at all.

Its stupid that Al Di Meola makes a simplistic comment of "asian : not too likely" to get the abstract rhythmic patterns which is internal and intrinsic.
This guy can spend all his life only learning a fraction of "World of TaLa" in Indian classical music.
This guy is a novice.
The real masters are else where, Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Vilayat Khan, Ali Akhbar Khan, U Srinivas...

he would not last an hour competing with even the decent musicians of south Indian classical music, in their rhythmic trips in the concerts. He himself would never be able to get get the track of the fast variation which some of such masters can make.

Al Di Meola is a novice? Are you for real? Listen to his album "Land Of The Midnight Sun" recorded in 1976. He was amazing even then. This guy is one of the best fusion guitarists alive today.

Not to demean Al Di Meola. But "playing against the time" doesn't sound too good to my ears. Personal preference. I prefer to play w/ the time. :)

can't argue with you there but music isn't a competition. It's there for enjoyment and the more you're open to and understand including rhythm or tala as you say the better. I listen to Britney Spears every day trying to find the true meaning of her songs. I hope in 60 years to have some understanding.

Actually, I'm a student of Ali Akbar Khan and I think Al Dimeola could get the hang of it. If John Mclaughlin can do it, so can Al. it's very true that indian classical music is by far the most complex.

Oh my God, You are a student of Ustaad Ali Akbar Khan ! I am honored. But Sahab, see coming from the great (asia)pedigree how would one feel if some one dismisses simplistically that you don't even qualify?
Sir, with due regards to you with this attitude, Al cannot learn it at all. Do you go to your Ustaad, thinking he is dumb?
I know even Yehudi Menuhin could learn about TALA. But both he and McLaughin sat at the feet of RaviShankar with humility to learn it

Indian music is completely weird to western ears like mine. It probably is harder, and players need a better ear (can't you move the frets on the indian = to guitar?) but to us, in the west, it just sounds out of tune because all your scales are half a semitone higher than our nearest equivalent. PS i like your weirdly formal english!
