This is my tribute to Matthew Shepard, a young man whose life was abruptly ended in one of America's most notorious hate crimes.

What a beautiful guy. So sad that it's been over 10 years now and there is still a huge hole in my heart every time I think about his death.
A part of me died that day. The part that had any hope of there being a God or ever being tolerance for all, much less equality.
It was when one of the murderer's girlfriends testified he had told her Matthew begged for his life, yet they still left him to die, that I knew once and for all there was no hope, & no God. RIP beautiful Matthew.

Has anybody ever thought that there may have been some government involvement in Shepard's murder? To me, Shepard's murder seems like it's to the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act as 9/11 was to the USA PATRIOT Act. Maybe the govt paid his murderers to murder him. Problem-Reaction-Solution. Manufacture the crisis, get a reaction, offer the pre-manufactured solution. Not trying to demean Shepard or make light of his murder. Just offering an alternative theory.

No one should have to suffer being beaten to death like that, it's horrible. But it seems as though everyone misses two important things in this:
1. It was a drug-related crime, done for money/drug reasons, not "hate".
2. Hate crimes are unconstitutional. Think about it...you are being punished for your THOUGHTS behind the crime. Ever read 1984? I don't know about the rest of you, but the idea of being punished for my thoughts and crime seems creepy. Though Police.
