not sure i entirely agree with that, but remember they're discussing lead playing. wayne definitely understands the role of lead playing with a jazz ensemble - the style. hes certainly far from the most interesting improviser (though hes better than you make out) but his balance and control with the big phat band are unreal. he gets the style perfect.

Well, I have heard enough Wayne. What I said came out a little over the top, but mind you, I'm comparing him to guys like Clifford, Diz, Miles, Freddie Hubbard, etc. But, again, jazz playing is objective. Maybe some people find Wayne's jazz playing more to their liking then Clifford, or any of those guys. Then you just have to agree to disagree, vehemently I might add.

If you read the liner notes for XXL, it says they recorded all the tracks for A Game of Inches, and then had Michael Brecker overdub his solo onto it from a different studio because he didn't have time to fly down and play it with the band. That's probably why Dianne Reeves didn't sing it with them.

Reminds me of the big phat band camp over the summer at CSU Northridge. What an amazing week. I was totally expecting the band to just come in the last day and play a concert, but they were there every day working with us all day. An unforgettable experience, learning improvisation from Andy Martin, (having Gordon over my shoulder while playing piano on a Goodwin tune was kind of scary, but hey, I learned a ton) and meeting Sammy Nestico was icing on the cake. Great video, amazing musicians!
